What Air Tickets say, what Airline Luggage can take, have you been treated differently? continue… August 29, 2008

One of the frustrations of travelling by airline is lost baggage. Very often the cause of this irritation is the lack of identification. It is often impossible to identify “incognito” baggage — no name, initials or other personal identification affixed to the airline luggage. The baggage may also be securely locked and look just like the other 2 000 pieces of airline luggage already in the “Lost Property” office!
It is always a relief when you arrive at your airline destination and your luggage shows up on the carousel. If it doesn’t appear immediately, don’t panic. The airline carrier will usually try to transport the passenger and luggage on the same flight but at times this may be impractical or impossible (for example if you are a late check-in or standby passenger). Your airline baggage will probably be dispatched on the next available flight. However, sometimes things do go wrong and the next flight wings its way to a different airline destination. In terms of the Warsaw Treaty, the airline carrier will pay you a small compensation for discomfort and tears, but this will probably be nowhere near the value of your lost luggage, unless you are on a very low budget to a tropical island.
Another reason for your luggage disappearing may be found under 0% “safety and security”. All luggage is X-rayed before being loaded and the airline carrier has the right, with or without you being present, to search through your luggage if they suspect that it contains any dangerous goods or arms and ammunition and so on. If you refuse such a airline search, then the carrier will refuse transporting both passenger and luggage.
Items that are generally speaking unacceptable as airline luggage are:
- Items listed as prohibited by law, regulations or orders issued by any state to be flown from, to or over;
- Items which, in the opinion of the airline carrier, are unsuitable for transport by air by reason of their weight, size or character, i.e. fragile or perishable;
- Weapons such as antique swords, knives, firearms or similar items, although these may be acceptable as checked airline luggage in accordance with the carrier’s regulations. They will not be permitted in the cabin.
Right to Refuse Airline Carriage
The airline carrier may refuse any baggage that in their opinion is unsuitable for a safe flight, unless advance arrangements for its airline carriage have been made with the carrier. The airline carrier may also refuse luggage if it is not in their opinion properly packed.
The airline transportation of pets, guide dogs or other animals requires prior arrangement with the carrier, subject to valid entry permits and other documentation required by the country of entry.
Dangerous Airline Goods
There are a number of articles that are deemed “dangerous” or hazardous to the airline passengers and aircraft in flight. These articles or substances may represent a danger to the safety of the flight, the health of the airline passengers or the integrity of the equipment on board the aircraft. There are very strict regulations regarding the carriage on board an aircraft of any articles or substances that may pose a threat.
Some goods are forbidden on aircraft under any circumstances and some need to be specially packaged and handled before being permitted as airline cargo. Other goods are often carried by airline passengers who are most often unaware just how dangerous they could be. Some of these articles are in everyday use, so it is important that you should be aware just how safe your airline baggage is.
