Norway Røros Mysterious Light Phenomena continue… September 19, 2008

Mineral deposits are another, and, of course, with Røros being famed for its mining heritage, it is not surprising to find that the area is heavily mineralized with all kinds of ores. Copper mining was once carried out in the Hessdalen region, and the magnetic field there is the strongest in Norway.’ Seismic stress seems to be another element in the complex matrix that gives birth to these strange lights, and interesting evidence on this aspect was obtained by Project Hessdalen. They are the only researchers so far who have taken seismographic readings when light phenomena were occurring. The histogram and its caption describe the present author’s findings when he took the raw seismographic data for February 1984 and correlated it with the project’s log of lights sightings for the same period, using only the most inexplicable lights. It can be seen that there was a dramatic increase of sightings from 12 February, peaking on 15 February, and falling away by 20 February, with the largest seismographic indication ‘embedded’ in the increase. Researchers such as Professor Michael Persinger of Laurentian University in Canada hypothesize that strain building up to the release of seismic stress can create electromagnetic conditions suitable for producing the lights. The histogram shown here certainly seems to be a classic demonstration of that process. Although Hessdalen is sometimes affected by small-scale quakes (interestingly, the type most associated with earth lights appearances), these seismographic indications were apparently caused by distant epicentres. Nevertheless, the local ground was obviously flexing. If seismic stress is a factor in the manifestation of the lights, however, no one yet understands what the exact mechanism is, what the nature of the light energy is, nor how it forms such distinct, discrete shapes and moves around. (These matters are equally problematical with regard to earthquake lights and ball lightning.
Another very strange property the lights sometimes seem to exhibit is apparent intelligence. Project Hessdalen field workers felt sure that some lights seemed to sense their presence, and there were occasional dramatic responses from the lights suggesting intelligence. This disturbing observation has been made even more strongly by the only other field researchers to study an outbreak of lights as it was happening — the team from Southeast Missouri State University led by Dr Harley Rutledge, which investigated the ‘flap’ around Piedmont, Missouri, in the 1970s.3 Indeed, there are many reports from around the world by witnesses who felt the lights they saw acted as if having some measure of intelligence. But the idea of there being some kind of intelligent energy haunting localized regions of our planet takes us into areas beyond the brief of this book!
Project Hessdalen carried out further work in the region during the winters of 1985 and 1986, and although lights were reported from time to time, it is now clear that the peak of activity occurred between 1982 and 1984.
We are left with hundreds of reports, the findings of Project Hessdalen and a hundred or so photographs overall testifying to a very mysterious ‘visitation’ that took place in the Røros district. Such ‘UFOs’ may not be so much from another planet, as from our own — in this case the mineral-rich geology of the Røros area itself. Every day, in some valley, mountain, moor or desert, such lights are appearing. They represent one of the greatest Earth Mysteries there is.
